You know you’ve made it in this world when you are asked to write a review for a 2018 Juno nominated duo! Bobs and Lolo have received a nomination in the Children’s Album of the Year category. I am hoping for an invite, but I’m not holding my breath, although, I already bought a sparkly dress. 🙂
I kind of feel like I work for Rolling Stone Magazine as I sit in my pajamas at my kitchen table while my children play outside in the snow with their dad, who can not carry a tune but loves his old school hip hop and he did once own a ’78 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, lowered with hydraulics.
Anyways……
The purpose of my blog is to write about things that I am passionate about. I write about my children, Adele’s Over the Rainbow Baskets and the trials and tribulations that come along with raising two daughters, one with Down syndrome, marriage, work and trying to find ways to stay sane without eating bags of chips or hiding under piles of dirty laundry in my closet.
We are incredibly passionate about music in this house. We started music therapy when Adele was 2 months old. She was on oxygen, had laryngomalacia and was frail and weak. When we attended music therapy, she perked up, she was alert was responsive to different instruments and sounds. We continued attending private classes for a couple years. Adele and Brinley thrived. Music brought them comfort, lifted them up and brought joy to their souls.
Music is a core function in our brain. Our bodies entrain to rhythm. We have physiologic responses to music. Children respond readily to music. Music taps into our emotions. Music helps improve our attention skills. Music uses shared neural circuits as speech. Music enhances speech. Music taps into our memories. Music is a social experience. (BrainHQ)
I took Brinley to a Bobs and Lolo concert a couple of years ago. This is when the obsession began. We purchased Wave Your Antlers, their Christmas album and instantly, the girls danced and learned the words to every song. This album was played for 2 years straight at bedtime! I suggested an intervention when Brinley started singing Christmas songs all through summer holidays. #waveyourantlersallyearlong

Recently, Bobs and Lolo released a new album called ‘Blue Skies’. A tightly sealed and unmarked package was delivered to our home. We’ve had the privilege of listening to some really super stellar songs. The album is filled with fourteen upbeat, toe-tapping, hand-clapping, get your bootie shaking songs. The music is fun and amusing and doesn’t alienate us parents. I find myself humming along to the songs and I may have caught on quickly to some of the choruses. The songs are expertly written and phenomenally produced and you can tell that a lot of heart, passion and dedication went into each and every track.
5 adjectives that describe this album…..
Endlessly Playable
Cleverly Written
Danceable
Masterful
Fresh
Instrumentation, melody and harmony are all in balance with each other. Each song focuses on a unique theme, which embraces our unique qualities as individuals. The songs encourage us to be content, be a good friend to others, take care of our environment and most importantly, be silly and have fun.
If you’ve had the opportunity to attend one of their concerts, you know that the children are encouraged to participate, sing songs and dance until their feet are aching and their bellies are sore from all the laughter.
In all honesty, I am not a mom that sits around listening to children’s music all day long. I enjoy music. Both girls have CD players in their rooms and fall asleep every night listening to their favourite songs. We listen to music during the day and we believe that the girls should be exposed to different genres. Bobs and Lolo have been on repeat for the past two weeks. Adele and Brinley laugh at each song. Adele dances and has learned many news words. She walks over to the karaoke machine, grabs the mic and drops some mad B & L beats!
If you want an album for the whole family. If you want upbeat. If you want joy and happiness. If you want to dance. I highly recommend that you get yourselves some Bobs and Lolo!
